What is Grace
What is Grace?
Grace is the basis of all understanding of Christian belief and values.
Grace is the love and mercy we are given by the creator because we are thought to be worthy to have it. God gives us this today even though we are not even close to being as he envisioned and created us to be. It is an unearned gift.
“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God and not the result of works, so that no one may boast” – Ephesians 2:8
In #Bangor Maine, #Grace Church is located at 193 Union St. today! You are Welcome to go there and see Grace UMC doing God’s Work.
#“It is the Heart in the Heart of the City”.
When you think about the term Grace, what comes to your mind? You might think about an unearned mercy that was given to you by God because you are loved and appreciated as a child and regardless if you are good or of a wayward spirit, you are deeply loved still. That is because Grace is a central part of the understanding of our life and faith in our Creator.
Grace can be defined as the love and mercy given to us by God because God wants us to have it, not because of anything we have done to earn it. “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God. It is a spontaneous gift from God to man — “generous, free and totally unexpected and undeserved”.
From #Bangor’s Westside, #Grace Church does the Work we are expected to be doing. You can too, by going there. Sunday Services are at 10 am year round. Stay for fellowship after the service as we share coffee and snacks. Then you will learn how you can get involved and help in our ministry to the poor and less fortunate in our city and neighborhoods. Find your Grace at Grace Church. Be part of the Mission of Grace and leave a small Donation to help the Homeless in our community.
John Wesley believed this about Grace.
In his sermon “Free Grace,” preached at Bristol in 1740, the believer who repents and accepts Christ is not “making himself righteous” by an act of his own will, such as would alter his dependency on the grace of God for his salvation. Faith and repentance, rather, are the believer’s trust in God that he will make them righteous. Wesley stated that God makes the initial move in salvation, but human beings are free to respond or reject God’s graceful initiative.
John Wesley believed that God provides three kinds of Divine Grace.
1. Prevenient grace is innate from birth. “Prevenient” means “comes before.” Wesley did not believe that humanity was totally “depraved.” He believed everyone is born with a modicum of divine grace—just enough to enable the individual to recognize and accept God’s justifying grace. 2.Justifying grace today is what is referred to as “conversion” or being “born again.” God’s justifying grace brings “new life in Christ.” Wesley believed that people have freedom of choice—to accept or to reject God’s justifying grace. 3. Sustaining grace. Wesley believed that, after accepting God’s grace, a person is to move on in God’s Sustaining grace toward perfection. He believed people can make sinful choices that will cause them to “fall from grace” or “backslide.” He said it is insufficient to claim God’s salvation and then stagnate, return to sinning deliberately, or not produce any evidence of following Christ. I like the Wesley definition but as you can see it is complicated. Time to get back to the basics. Grace is a good thing to seek out so if you’d like to join a caring friendly fellowship, please come to our Sunday Service at 10:00 am. You are Welcome to join us. Grace UMC is located at 193 Union Street in Bangor.
There are many ways in which you may get involved at Grace UMC if you would like to Volunteer in the Thrift Shop, Work on the Food Ministry or Train for the Street Ministry. There are also tasks needed in the church such as helping with operating the elevator, music and lector tasks, being a greeter, being an usher or communion assistant. Just ask the Pastor if you’d like to get involved in ministry to the poor and suffering or assist in the church service. You can be part of Grace. Thanks for considering these ways of helping out. All Welcome.
Grace truly does change everything: our relationship to God both now and into eternity, and our interactions with other people. When we receive the gift of God into our lives, this is a restart in everything; the renewing of the way we think, values, goals and priorities are less self-centric and more aligned with the thoughts of God. And as the cup of one’s life gets filled past the rim, we overflow his grace into other people’s lives. Jesus said “When you did it to the least of these, you did it unto me.”
Thank You for visiting Grace Church Pages. If you would like to leave a donation to help feed the hungry and homeless in this area, it would be much appreciated.
